I dont know if you can get Nissans in the US, but they are also a car well worth considering.
Generally low mileage, as most people who own them only seem to use them for local travelling (having been in mine for 6 hours going from Brighton to Liverpool, i see why!)

They are also built really well. They were designed to be the dfirst disposable car, replaced after 5 years. Well, mine's 15yrs old this year and is still going strong, needed some hefty maintenance last xmas, but that is to be expected.

My previous car was an oldsmobile cutlass calais... and about ten years older than you'd like. BUT, it went forEVER on a tank of fuel, had very few maintenance issues (okay, alternator... keep that on hand ) and was an all around great car. I don't know what the newer models get (it was a '90), but that car was pushing 27 mpg.

I currently have a '94 cutlass supreme (yes, I like oldsmobile... and my uncle works at a dealer ) that gets decent gas mileage, too. Haven't had any issues with the car (no repairs other than when we originally got the car) other than a pair of engine mounts that I just replaced... and you're going to get that when they've got 180,000 miles on them! Great car, very few problems.

I'm peeved that they're no longer making Olds... I love them. *pouts*

she said she's been getting 30mph out of it

I'll bet if you try REALLY hard, you can get one to go more than 30 mph too...

i think you should reconsider. honda's even with high mileage are still solid cars. they are known for going hundreds of thousands of miles before they break down for good as long as you keep them properly maintained. a friend of mine said he knew a guy who had 400k miles on his civic and tried to get honda to do something for him, supposedly honda told him to call back when he reaches 800k if you don't want a honda, then you should try for a toyota, imho.

I don't care about wether it be from asia, or a US car

its only gonna be for a few years anyway, before we get another anyway.

i'm not going honda as the majority of people at my work either drive accords or civics, and the ones that i've seen in my price range have REALLY high mileage...

Yeah, if you are just looking for a good commuter, then you can pretty much just ditch the American brands. Japanese cars in general tend to be superior, so your best bets would probably be a small Toyota or Honda like Moondog said.

imho, the focus and the cavalier are both garbage. don't waste your money on those cars. if you can really get a honda accord for less than $6k that would be your best buy. if you can find a toyota corrolla that would be even better. if you try out a focus and decide you like it, then that's fine, but imo the focus is not a good car and not as economical as people make it out to be.

Then if I were you, I'd go with something off the firs tpart of my list. Some personal recommendations would be a Saturn SC2, Ford Focus, Chevy Cavalier, Hyundai Accent/Elantra, and Pontiac Sunfire. These were all fairly available throughout the Metroplex and can be found in an array of colors and prices around there...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

see, normally i'd just research research and research, and take my time. But we're on a time limit here - hubby got a new job on the other side of town, and I need a vehicle to get to work also.

I'd prefer something small. I dont' care if it is 2,3,4 or 5 door. Smaller the better, but I'm open to vehicular brands. I kinda like the styling of the ford focus, grand am and a few others, but, the one i cannot stand is the ford taurus prior to 2000 (pretty much why i scrapped it off the list before 2000).

if anything, we may be buying as early as monday. (eek)

oh, and a dallas zip code - 75230

If it is available in a V6

I just bummed over to Autotrader.com and did a search within 300 miles (of a Granbury ZIP, since I didn't know a Dallas one) for a price range of 0-6000, all makes, 2000-2006. Some of the better ones I got back that get good gas mileage were...

Chevy Cavalier
Honda Accord
Ford Escort
Dodge Neon
Hyundai Elantra
Ford Focus
Saturn SC2
Pontiac Sunfire

As for other cars that got returned, there were...

Mitsubishi Galant
Dodge Intrepid
Hyundai Sonata
Ford Taurus
Pontiac Grand Am
Oldsmobile Intrigue
Hyundai Tiburon
Pontiac Grand Prix
Chevy Camaro
Volkswagen Passat
Buick Century
Mazda Millenia
Mazda Protege
Mazda 626
Daewoo Lanos
Ford Contour
Nissan Altima
Mercury Sable
Oldsmobile Alero
Nissan Sentry
Chevy Malibu

Okay, I stopped after 4 pages, but you get the idea. You actually need to narrow down your search a tad bit with a little bit more information...

1) How many miles is acceptable on a car?
2) What is your preference in size/shape/look? (Sedan, coupe, etc.)
3) What is automatically ruled out based on either looks, feel, or personal preference? (Such as not liking Fords just because you've heard a lot of bad things, etc.)

I can throw my recommendations out there, but until you answer those three questions, there's really not much point. I like certain cars more than others and have my reasons, but it's going to be your car, so you need to know your own preferences first...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.
