Hi,
Depending upon the size of the tank, I'd say that things
are going quite normally. You are watching the beginning
of what is called the nitrogen cycle. Depending upon the
size of the tank, how many and what size the fish are,
and how much interference occurs (size & frequency of
water changes, if any), the cycle can take a few weeks
to months to complete.

Because you have invested in a test kit, I assume you
know about the cycle. It progresses from Ammonia, to
nitrites, to nitrates. Generally speaking as one spikes,
the preceeding one drops to zero or nearly zero, in the
general plot of a sine wave. It could be that you have
moved to the nitrite peak and the ammonia has dropped
to the point where the test kit cannot read.

I suggest that you simply test, top off the tank for
evaporation, and wait. Once the nitrates start to peak,
and the nitrities drop off to zero, then the tank has
completely cycled.

Frank
