I have seen posts where people recomend aging water. What is the point of aging water? Wont it just go stagnate?

I started aging water about 20 years ago, two 25Lt water containers. The only reason then was a big problem with "White Spot" which always arrived during our colder months.

I also at one time airated it but not for long as it did not make any differance.

Today I have two 25lt and one 12lt containers for storing water. I add the dechlorinator in as soom as I store it.

I have only had one little trouble with white spot while doing this and it was introduced by a Cardinal Tetra into my mew Betta tank.

When I go on a fishing trip I store a 50lt and the wife does a small regular water change this water has been aged up to four weeks.

Hi,
I believe the "white spot" that Keith is speaking of is
also called Ich. It is a parasite and if the water contains
the parasite, in any of its presentations, letting it sit
will deprive them of a host and they will die before
getting into a tank with fish.

I also age water in 200 Litre tanks & i don't add an air stone or filter. I just leave the water there for 2/3 weeks & then use it for my water changes.

bcwcat22,

Awesome question, I would like to know the answer to that as well.

I think I have seen entries here that talk about a dormant stage of Ich, but I don't think a detailed explanation of how and why and what was given.

To start off with I am in a semi rural area south of Melbourne Aust. There are several dams which the water is stored before it reaches our water supply. All these dams have fish in them plus many other water life. Any good LFS in our area will tell you that "Ich" and many other nasties actually comes through our water especially during the colder months.
Last year as the water warmed up a very nasty bacteria bloomed in our water it was very costly to myself and many otheres in the area. The bacteria was so strong it actually killed all the good bacteria in fish tanks.

As Frank stated if there is no host the Ich will usually die. There is one stage in its life cycle that the Ich can actually be dorment if the water is extremly cold. This is one reason for increasing the temperature when treating Ich as it speeds up its life cycle.

I know this was long answer but I hope it answered your questions.

I would say no. All water unless direct from a bore must be stored somewhere lakes, weirs, and dams and this is where the problem lies. To get there it comes via creeks, and rivers where there are many forms of water life. It has been proven that even rain water is not as pure as some would like it. Ich does not come from no where it had to origionally come from a water supply along with many other nasties that arrive in our fish tanks.
