Cut down feeding, increase water changes, make sure you don't have your light on too much, e.g I am at work all day so I have mine on a timer so it comes on in the morning for an hour when I am getting ready and then when I get back in the evenings until i go to bed

+ ensure tank is not direct sunlight

i dont really overfeed them (maybe slightly ) but my light is on a timer.. 4 hours at night and 4 hours in the morning,,it doesnt get direct light and i do regular water changes.. so i dont know where it has come from but it has taken over!!!
have you ever heard about the light tube causing algae growth????
do i have the light on for too long???

Usually the case is that an abundance of nutrients, plus light equals algea. This is what MDB was saying. Do a nitrAte test, or have your lfs do one for you.

What is your stock and tank size? These will also help us.

Also what type of algae . Different algae often require different treatments to deal with them.

ie: Some fish will eat certian types of algae but not eat others, other algae (cynobacteria) is eaten by none.

Sorry for taking so long to reply and thanks for replying!
i did a nitrate and nitrite test and one came up 0(clear) (i cant remember which is which!) and the other one was around 15ppm...
the algae is like thin green hair and some of it looks fuzzy and dark...
my tank is around 20g.. i have two bristlenoses and 3 electirc yellows...
ive been treating with small amounts of some algae treatment everytime i do water changes (weekly)
i hope that helps!

Hi,
You have provided a "soup" of nutrients and nothing to
eat it, except algae. From your description of the
algae, you have two types, the bright green hair algae,
and the darker brush type. You make no mention of plants.
Plants in sufficient quantity, along with some algae
eating fish, will out compete the algae for the nutrients.

How old you aquarium light is only makes a difference
to plants, not to algae. To algae, the duration of the
light can become important. With no plants, there is
no sense in having the lights on for any longer than
you are actually in the home viewing the fish. In other
words, you could turn the light(s) on when you get home
from work, and off when you go to bed.

You need to either dilute the "soup" through regular,
small (10%) water changes, decrease the light, or
provide something to out compete the algae.

Frank

Thanks for your reply Frank!

I actually i have plants .. i just forget to mention them! sorry!
i have vale growing in the back of the tank and 3 other plants.. 2 of which are the same... im not quite sure what they are though,. which is why i have the light on for 8 hours a day.. 4 in the morning and 4 at nite,,

so you recommend doing regular water changes to remove the algae (eventually)?
