gary,

one of the other members sent me this article http://www.tomgriffin.com/aquamag/cycle2.html. Since my only experience is with a 40g community tank (years ago), and currently with three male bettas i have set out to learn as much as possible about the process. while the article is quite detailed, i have been reading as many posts on fishless cycling as i can hoping to augment or modify the process to fit my own situation. i know from reading some of your posts that you are an advocate of NIC and think that fishless cycling is not necessary. however, i assure you that i won't commit to the fishless cycle without proper research and understanding of the process and how it relates to the fish i want to keep, their planned environment, and my own propensity to carry out such an undertaking.

thanks for the advice on the kit. i did not realise that it does not test for nitrates. is there another kit you know of that does?

I'd like to know the procedure you're going to use to cycle the tank...

And be advised that particular kit does not have a nitrate test.

Thanks, Kim! I was worried that that would be a major maintenance expense.

Oh, Yeah, much longer than that. Check your bottles they should have the number of tests on there. I think most of them are at least 75.
