Howdy all,

I just tested the water in my tank. So far my PH is 7.0 (what l want) and my KH is 8deg (143ppm). Is this to much? and is it a problem to have too much KH i the water?

I'm going to make it a planted tank with a DIY C02 system in a few weeks time.

ooops.. sorry mods.. l have posted this in the wrong section

If you are worried about kH then use some peat in the filter. It lowers the kH and will help to maintain the pH where it is. It will slightly stain the water yellow, but it helps the plants to be tougher and also helps fish to be more resistant to fungus and wounds (tougher skins) It may also help to control algae but I won't vouch for that as I still have some, but the ottos seem to love it! Also the slight tinge to the water really brings out the colours of my fish. The krib is stunning, the barbs are bright. Everybody looks great instead of washed-out like they were when I brought them home from the lfs. In my Aqua clear 50 I use a regular filter bag and Fluval granular peat,I adjust how much I use by how the water looks and I test pH regularly to be sure the pH is holding steady. I have actually never tested kH but I will soon as I get a test kit for it.

Hi,
With your current, comfortable pH, and a KH of 8, I don't
think I'd do anything. With the addition of plants and the
CO2, I think things will work out just fine.

Where would you like this moved to?

A high kh will make a high ph but yours is pretty much perfect for co2 injection. Even without co2 it's perfect for most fish. My tapwater is 18kh 8.0-9.0 ph. That's getting too high.

Thank you guys for your feed back.

I'm very happy with my water conditions and would like to keep it where it is, as it sounds like an ideal condition. I didnt want to do anything to the KH unless it was to high or a problem for either fish or plants. but from all your feed back, it sounds like l'm ok.

Thanks again guys.
Wayne
