Hello

I know there have been a few threads on cloudy water before and now I'm wishing I took more notice! My 10g has gone a little bit cloudy. I noticed after I did a water change on Tuesday night. I don't know what my readings are at the moment but my ammonia and nitrite should be 0 and nitrate will be low also ... although you never know! I'll test the water if required. There is only one betta in the tank. Just wondered what the cause is and any tips on how to get it back to normal. I'm also noticing a bit more algae on the plants so I'm wondering if that's related. I know cloudy water has been a nightmare for a few people so any pearls of wisdom will be gratefully received.

tanks!

Hope this helps...

http://www.drhelm.com/aquarium/cloudy%20water.html

I had cloudy brownish water once when my tank was cycling and I had a couple oscars in there.

Cloudy green water, a green algae outbreak.

Hi Dafishman

thanks for that - it was very useful. I've been medicating my tank as my Betta has a slight skin condition - looks like that may have caused it. Thanks!

Have a look at this thread I have had massive problems sudden deaths etc and the medications caused a very merky/cloudy water after using this stuff after one week and three applications of this product perfectly crystal clean water. I now can see the total length 5ft of the tank it is so clear it would be possible to take a photo from the end of the tank to the opposite end.

Oh wow, you have neon tetras in with your betta? I thought that was a no-no. Maybe i read it wrong then. Any other fish that you have noticed work well?

That is one thing I did a lot of research on was the compatability of M Bettas.

Several LFS where I buy/visit have Bettas in with single species rather that have them in little bottles. I know of one Betta which was living in a 5ft planted tank he actuallty looked fantasticly happy.

Also when I got my Betta he had seen other fish and did not seem aggresive towards them.

When I got him home he lived for about a month in a breeding net in my 5ft tank and in this way he got used to other fish.

Actually now the very small Clown Loach follows him around.

Thanks Keith - I'll keep an eye out for Flex - might be a handy one to keep in the cupboard! The tank seems to have cleared up a bit and is looking a lot better - as is Otis!

In fact had a bit of a spring clean in my 10g yesterday and bought a really cool new rock and a plant on a ceramic pot ... and some tank mates for Otis. Keith, after seeing your cute pictures of your Ottos I couldn't resist them - I bought 2 who are happily munching away on my algae!

thanks for you help as always!

Hi Fishymama,

I have 7 Betas and I have noticed that it depends on the Beta himself, I can put other fish in with 4 of them. Steve is in a 10 gallon tank with fancy guppies, Max has neon tetras, Dumb Dumb has Ghost shrimp, and Sam has a Dwarf Frog.

Thanks Oscar_Jewel

Otis seems to be alright with his new tank mates. He's had a little chase of the little blighters but I think he was just being curious. Other some nippy cherry barbs he hasn't really lived with anyone before. They all seem to be minding their own business now!
