My tank has been running for 3 years. It is a 20 gallon. My test kits ran out last week so I dont know the readings. After I cleaned it yesterday and did a 75% water change (about) since it was really dirty, this morning the water was slightly cloudy. What caused it and will it go away eventually??? My tank has never had cloudy water before either.

More than likely you are experiencing a bacterial bloom. It will probably clear up in a day or two. I wouldn't be overly concerned unless it continues on past a few days.

A 75% water change is rather large is there any particular reason for doing this several smaller changes done three days appart is usually better.

Also did you do any filtration cleaning if so what did you do?

As Old Timer stated it sounds like a bloom this can be caused by a too big of a water change. I would consider adding a measured amount of Bio Starter or similar product this will help the good bacteria in the tank. I always add a measured amount at every water change again I must say this keeps the good bacteria in its origional state as the old bacteria regenerates its self it is never in the origional state.

I didnt do anything to the filter or anything to effect filtration. All I did was a bigger water change than normal because the tank had gotten extremely dirty within the last few weeks. The week of May 28th we went to Playa del Carmen so somebody fed the fish which also caused a lot of extra food to be in the gravel when I moved the fake plants to clean around them. I think it is getting better now too.

I would advise you to now do a good filter change and cleaning, as it could easly be blocked up will all the gunk it removed from the water. Remember use the fish tank water only when cleaning all the filtration materials. Also add some Bio Starter or similar product to boost all the good bacterai in the tank/filter.

The water is not cloudy anymore, but sparkling clean. I think it is the cleanest it has ever been since it has been set up. I will clean the filter and I need to change the filter pad once I buy some more this week.
