I've been keeping my ammonia at 4ppm with no nitrites or nitrates. Tonight I tested my water and the ammonia is around 2ppm with nitrites at 5ppm and nitrates at 10ppm. Is my ammonia supposed to drop to zero before the nitrite spike occurs? Does it seem like it's coming along okay? |

The ammonia-consuming bacteria can't convert all of the ammonia overnight, which is why there are measurable amounts of it and nitrite at the same time. Looks like your cycle is coming along just fine. ![]() |

You may see alittle Nitrate and this is ok as long as they are below 20ppm. Make sure that the levels stay stable at least a good week before adding new fish. The total cycle will vary with tank size but most can be cycled out within 1 1/2 months. You can add an additive called "Cycle" to help speed up the cycle process. Hope this helps.
