Is the nitrate too high and should i get a water hardness kit?

20ppm is the highest I like to see nitrate. I prefer to keep it under 10 though.

Water hardness testkits can be useful, I like to have them just so I know when I need to adjust the hardness.

Hi,
Most of the literature I've read seems to indicate that
40ppm (mg/l) is about the maximum for a freshwater tank.

Regular water changes, gravel vacuuming, a normal bioload,
and not over feeding, will combine to keep the nitrate
levels below 40.
