Water hardness testkits can be useful, I like to have them just so I know when I need to adjust the hardness. Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes. |

Regular water changes, gravel vacuuming, a normal bioload, and not over feeding, will combine to keep the nitrate levels below 40.
