Distilled water has a very low pH, very low gH and kH. Basically, it's almost pure H2O. This makes it perfect for topping off your tank so as not to add any minerals to raise the hardness to unhealthy levels.

If you intend to use it to fully fill your tank, you must have a reclaim chemistry such as Kent Marine's RO-Right. This will add back essential minerals and electolytes the fish need to survive. If you do not add these minerals, the fish will end up being stripped of them, and getting sick and eventually croaking. You should also use a pH stabilizer like Wardley's Bullseye.

It's great to use if you can, as it doesn't have any of the added chemicals that come with tap water, and it's usually a little more pure.

Distilled water has no place in the aquarium unless an attempt to lower pH/excessive hardness is desired...

Trying to manipulate pH with chemicals is never the way to go.

RO is actually cheaper than distilled too . . . DI really has NO place in FW tanks at all.

Grocery stores usually sell jugs of it. Either that or any good LFS that sells marine fish.

You'll discover that using anything except tap water, dechlorinated, for your tank will be too expensive...

Those wishing to slowly reduce pH to trigger spawning in certain trops will slowly add RO or distilled water to their tank water until the desired pH value is reached.
