Clean the sponges and rinse the other media with old tank water to remove any large pieces of gunk. Then put it straight back on the tank ,this way you won't kill off the bacteria colony, However as Eheims have large baskets you would have to leave it out of water for a while before the colonies totally died off.Carbon should be thrown away and new stuff put in.

Gibson SG you know you want one!!

Im afraid all carbon wether as a sponge or as granules has a short lifespan in an aquarium normally 2-4 weeks max, this is because it absorbs all the nasties in the water but eventually it can absorb no more and there is no way to revitalise it,so bin it and put in new stuff.

Dean,

Carbon does a great job or removing impurities that might cloud your tank. However, many of us do not use carbon in our filters. Use a plain pad instead of the carbon pad and see if you notice the difference. By the way, I buy the inexpensive filter sheets from the LFS and cut pads to fit my Eheim.

Or try the Kent Absorbtion Resin.

It takes all of the the bad gasses and broken down contaminates out but doesnt remove trace elements. Plus its, rechargable.
