If that person got out a test kit he'd soon find we're not all uninformed - moreover, he sstated specifically that he added plants when he added fish. That can reduce the ammonia levels such that you can cycle with almost any fish. Can more fish stand the cycle than we usually use? Sure, you can cycle with almost any species - but there's permanent damage to the gills involved.
The cycle's fully proven, as anyone with a test kit knows. Ammonia goes up, nitrites go up, nitrates go up. Is he saying our test kits are lying to us or is he merely mistaken?

Thanks for showing it to me, though, it's a good laugh for the day!

BTW - there's an "edit" feature on all of the posts so you can go back and fix one without having to make a new one. Works very, very well!

That's probably the same guy who eats Chinese-prepared spare ribs without "fried rice"...

I've seen that article before and believe me it's so much baloney.

It flys in the face of all we know to be tried and true. I wish I could show him six dead Clown Loaches that were not properly pH matched to the host tank and died within two hours, some within minutes after immediately being placed in the tank.

Don't believe this guy is accurate in his statements.

I sure don't.

The man said all you needed to know in his article. :

Well take this all for what it's worth as I probably don't know what I am talking about.

In his discussion of reverse osmosis the guy says:

"In my case I use it in about 10 tanks with a capacity of around 100 gallons....I'm lazy so I don't change water every day and I figure 50 gallon every other day is more than I'll need for those few tanks."

I'm sure anybody could keep fish in uncycled tanks if they changed 50% of the water every two days.

I'm sure his tanks are cycled, he just slows the process down to a trickle with those water changes so it never hurts the fish. He's a bit of an idiot, but at least his schedule meshes to the benefit of the fish.

So what you're saying is that water changes during a cycle will lower the levels of ammonia and nitrite? I've never really considered that as a solution, at least not during a cycle.

Well, most people don't do it, because it slows everything down a heck of a lot, but as long as there's a little ammonia (and there always is, unless one does 100% changes) it'll feed the bacterial colonies and they'll slowly build up. Remember, if he's doing all those changes, he only has to have enough bacteria to keep up with the ammonia that's left after those changes. If he went away for a few weeks, he'd surely be in some trouble.

Well, I don't hope his fish die, it's not their fault after all!

Basically, what he doesn't understand is that if he would cycle tanks, he wouldnt' have to change 50% of the water every other day. But I suppose, as long as he keeps it up, he will probably be fine.

He doesn't realize he could actually be much "lazier" than changing 50% of water in 80 tanks every other day if he would just cycle them! lol

this gave me an idea he could use to make his "lazy" life even lazier, but don't suggest it to him, he might do it!

New method for keeping fish without ever cycling:

1) fix screen mesh in the bottom of a WORKING toilet
2) add fish
3) flush twice a day

what could be easier?

again, please nobody tell the guy this "idea"!

I was really curious so i asked him. . .

"Well to tell you the truth, that article was just written in jest. But
also back when I started in the fish hobby, nobody ever heard of 'cycling'. I'm
70 years old and a lot of things were not around that long ago. When I first
started to drive a car, there was no such thing as "automatic shift" and
the
'start' button was on the floor where you pushed it in with your foot to start
the car. Oh yeah, there was NO television until I was in 2nd year high and then
only one channel.
Yes things change. I guess we were cycling our tanks without even knowing
it back then.

Guys/girls, its the internet!! Be cautious what sites you can trust. I've read tons of cycling articles and the one above was a first that says cycling is useless. Just because he says it's useless doesn't mean anyone should throw out all the other "reliable" sources.
