To make a long story short, the husband of an acquaintance works for the water department and she was telling me that for some reason the water in my county in GA tends to have higher concentrations of chlorine and chloramine (among other things) than every other county in the state. She knows we have fish tanks. So, since we do use a Python to fill my 55g directly from the tap should I add slightly more than the recommended dosage of dechlorinator? Or (and this may be a dumb question here) is there a test kit out there to check my tap water for chlorine, etc. before each water change? I don't want to add too much dechlorinator b/c I don't know if that could potentially be harmful for my fish but I also don't want to perhaps have a problem with chlorine in my tank, either.

p.s. My other 2 tanks are small (5g & 10g) so I can age their water easily. Oh, and we don't even drink our tap water w/o using the Brita pitcher, it tastes funny.

Hi,
Water companies tend to overdose their water in
the hot months to kill off bacteria blooms that
come with the bright sun and hot temperatures.
Also to combat problems within the city plumbing.

I would continue to drain the tank, with the python
as you are, then add, perhaps an extra drop or
two of the chlorine/chloramine remover and fill as
before.
Been doing it for years with no ill effects.
