Apparently i have high high levels of nitrate according to a water test even though mine says it only 0.10 what ever.

Could someone tell me how often and what % i should be changing?

BTW if my nitrate is sooo high how coe my corys have nice long barbels?

Any chance we can get that in ppm nitro? I'm guessing if you say it's high, that it's 100ppm
Smaller more frequent water changes are better than doing just one large one. Hornwort is a great low light consumer of nitrAtes as well.

Ok Nitro... lets start out with your test readings.

0.10 is number without a unit of measure. Is it mg/l, rods to the hog's head...what? We need the info first before being able to tell you if it's "too high".

Hi,
NitrATE levels are generally ignored in freshwater tanks.
Unless, they cause problems. Too low and your tank can
suddenly "enjoy" an outbreak of the dreaded slime algae.
Too high and the other forms of algae will take hold and
thrive. The general opinion seems to be that one should
"shoot" for a level of 10ppm and not exceed 30, especially
in a heavily planted tank.

In a tank with little or no plants frequent small water
changes and a light fish load, is the way to keep the
nitrates down.

NitrITES, on the other hand, should always read zero in
an established tank. One that is new and cycling will
show some as the ammonia is converted to nitrites and
then to nitrates. Excess nitrites or ammonia will harm
the cories barbels.

From your comments about the barbels, I thought you might
be asking about nitrites, rather than nitrates.

Frank

We like to measure nitrates in ppm's, parts per million...

The new thinking is that nitrates are not the enemy that they once were determined to be.

In fact, ppm's in excess of 90 are acceptable if, repeat if, your tank is free of green algae and all its related species and water quality is excellent.
