Here's an issue I've been pondering... after I clean the tank... algae scrape, change filters, etc. How long should I wait to test the water? I figure an hour, but should I wait longer?

One hour should be more than enough since if you have the right fileration setup, the entire volume of water in your tank should have gne via the filter 6 or 7 time.

why do you test water after you clean the tank? if the tank is established you should rarley need to test especially if you do regular maintenance

The tank in question is new. I rarely test the older tanks, 'casue I can normally see when something's wrong. I actually tested by 30g for the first time in about eight months recently, only to show my boyfriend what the new tank's tests should look like when cycled. Well, that and the pH test. I just want to make sure that I'm getting proper readings from the new tank while I'm going through the stocking phase.

Hi,
Testing could be done before maintenance to see how far
the system has changed since the last time. If values
are far out of wack, perhaps you might want to change
the water more frequently.

As far as testing a tank after maintenance, I always check
mine the next day. With a heavily planted tank, waiting
allows everything to circulate and settle back down. Then
I test to see how much I need to add (stump remover for
instance) to bring things back to where they should be.
