I don't know why you'd want to lower kh but the safest and most effective way in my opinion is to dilute it with distilled or bottled water depending how much you need to lower it. Adding chemicals usually isn't very stable and peat moss filtering isn't as effective at softening water as it is at turning your tank water brown.

It's such a pain to do, and it seems like so much more trouble than it's worth.

If its no higher than maybe 5 dKH / 90 ppm you probably don't need to change it.
