![]() | Lowering Hardness |
sawilson![]() Small Fry Posts: 10 Votes: 0 Registered: 27-Aug-2004 ![]() ![]() | Hello all The water i am going to be using in my tank is hard and therefore I need to lower it quite a lot. I have been advised to use peat in the filter, but i have a few questions regarding this, 1) Is it not very messy 2) What kind of peat EXACTLY do i use 3) How should i put it in the filter (some sort of net bag?) Any info would be much appreciated, or any other suggestions Cheers |

Yes, you put it within your filter in a mesh bag. You can buy everything you need at your LFS. Look for something similar to this: [link=http://www.bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xm It depends on your water how much you should use. Add a bit at a time, untill you get your water to the desireable pH and hardness. |

Maybe I shouldnt worry too much about it as I have been advised that as I am buying the fish locally, they are probably used to the water anyway. Thanks again all for your replies |

As long as you keep the pH stable, thats whats really important in a small difference. I know bogwood will lower the pH a bit by leeching tannins into the water. |

So pH 7.5 ---> 7.0 means that difference is five-fold. Increasing/decreasing pH by 1 in scale means ten-fold difference and dropping by 2 means hundred-fold difference. I would be carefull when increasing or decreasing the pH values Last edited by tiolpu at 29-Sep-2004 23:51 |
