Hello all

The water i am going to be using in my tank is hard and therefore I need to lower it quite a lot.

I have been advised to use peat in the filter, but i have a few questions regarding this,

1) Is it not very messy
2) What kind of peat EXACTLY do i use
3) How should i put it in the filter (some sort of net bag?)

Any info would be much appreciated, or any other suggestions

Cheers

I wouldn't mess with trying to lower the hardness. Your fish will adjust to your water.

I agree with Kim, that letting your fish adjust is a good idea. Otherwise, get fish that like hard water (there are some beauties).

What kind of pH/hardness do you have, and what do you want to get it to?

Yes, you put it within your filter in a mesh bag. You can buy everything you need at your LFS. Look for something similar to this:

[link=http://www.bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=28671;category_id=3145]http://www.bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=28671;category_id=3145" style="COLOR: #FFFF80[/link]

It depends on your water how much you should use. Add a bit at a time, untill you get your water to the desireable pH and hardness.

The ph is 7.5 would prefer around 7
GH is 200
KH is 115

All of these may change in time as the tank is only just set up (no fish) would prefer the GH to be around 150 which is slightly hard (correct?)

Maybe I shouldnt worry too much about it as I have been advised that as I am buying the fish locally, they are probably used to the water anyway.

Thanks again all for your replies

A 7 and a 7.5 difference isn't that big of a deal. As long as you keep the pH stable, thats whats really important in a small difference. I know bogwood will lower the pH a bit by leeching tannins into the water.

Hmmm.... pH values has logaritmic scale. So pH 7.5 ---> 7.0 means that difference is five-fold. Increasing/decreasing pH by 1 in scale means ten-fold difference and dropping by 2 means hundred-fold difference. I would be carefull when increasing or decreasing the pH values
