The 100 gal that I bought earlier this summer came with some white marble chips. I was thinking of possibly using them if they won't change the pH. I haven't tried a vinager test yet (I don't have any but could buy some ). The pH of my tanks naturally run 6.8-7.2. I haven't checked the gH lately but last time it was 3 (if I remember right). Anyone know if marble will affect the ph??

Marble is a calcite-based rock, as is limestone. Therefore I would say there is very good certainty that your marble chips will have an affect on your pH.

Definitely do a vinegar test on the rocks before using them.

Hi,
Andy is absolutely right. Marble is a metamorphic rock
that consists of Calcite and/or Dolomite. It could change
your water's hardness and pH.

Another concern is what you are going to have in the
tank. If you are going to house Rift fish, and no plants,
then the chips might look good. However the chips are
too large for plants to anchor in. The large chips leave
large gaps for fish and food waste to accumulate in
between and rot.
Additionally, fish tend to be more comfortable with
darker backgrounds and more natural looking substrates.
White chips could cause stress and keep many in
seclusion, hiding under plants or in caves during the
time the lights were on.

thanks for the replies, I kind of had a feeling that would be the case. I am planning on putting a couple of larger central american cichlids in the tank so no plants anyway but I definately don't want to change the water chemistry.
