![]() | Mould on wood |
Dancing-shrimp![]() Small Fry Posts: 6 Kudos: 6 Votes: 0 Registered: 19-May-2005 ![]() ![]() | Hi! I set up a juwel vision 180 the week before Christmas with gravel, silica sand, assorted plants and some mopani wood. The tank seems to have cycled (I'm getting 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite test results). The problem is there is a grey fluffy looking mould on the wood which is spreading and I'm not sure what I should do to get rid of it or if it's harmful? At the moment there are no fish in the tank. Thank you in advance. |

By this I mean soaking it for several weeks if not longer and then placing in boiling water for a short period or heating in the oven? It sounds like you have some type of a fungi growing on the wood and this could cause problems with your fish. I would remove the DW and treat as above to insure any type of fungi or bacterial problems are taken care of. Not sure if you need to drain the tank and start over by cleaning and sterilizing it, but I'm sure others will jump in with more experience in this area. Jim ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It seems perfectly harmless to fish, in fact some will eat it, even though it looks pretty disgusting. Use your fingers to loosen it from the wood and suck it out at water change and in a week or two it will disappear. |

I checked the website of the wood's supplier, and it said that the mold isn't uncommon, isn't dangerous to fish and that it usually goes away on its own when the tank balances out. That's what happened in my case, anyway. |
