Hello,

I have a new 90G tank. Its been running for about a week now. It contains about 17 different fished 4 plants. I test the water daily for Ammonia, Nitrite & Nitrate. My last reading was: Ammonia=0, Nitrite=.50, Nitrate=0 & Ph=6.4 (Ph had dropped from 7 to 6.4). My filtration system is a XP3 FilStar Canister Filter, w/ the combination of BioSafe, BioCoat & NIC. I add a small amount of NIC every time I add new fishes to the tank, as recommended on the label.

My question is:

How come have not seen any Ammonia build up but I have a slightly increase in Nitrite? Everything else has stayed the constant. Is this normal? I was expecting the Ammonia level start increasing by now, but I guess the NIC is keeping the Ammonia and Nitrite in check. BTW, I am in the process to add a few more 4 to 6.

I am not planning to do a water cycle (20 to 30%) until I notice a big change or waste level get to noticeable (2 to 3 weeks).

Uhh, wait you have fish in there, right?
what kind and how many?
(without fish where are you getting ammonia, unless you are doing fishless cycle using pure ammonia)

You have any live plants in there?
(plants can use ammonia as their nitrogen nutrient...something like that:%))

What kind of test are you using? Does it have drops or little strips?

4 Swordtails
3 Flying Foxes
2 more I cant remember their names.
4 live plants

I am using Freshwater Master Kit. It has drops, I don't like strips.

hey i also have nitrite but no ammonia my nitirte is .02pm
