Everyone says you shouldn't let the nitrate levels in your tank get "too high" over the "long term." But what's the definition of "too high" and the definition of "long term"? 40 ppm? 80 ppm? 100 ppm? Two weeks? A month? Six months?

At what point (time-wise and level-wise) do problems start occurring?

Just a curiosity question -- I do weekly water changes, so 40 ppm is about the highest level of nitrates I have in my tanks.

As far as I know there is a slight debate over this. Some say 40 ppm, others say letting them get up to 100ppm is ok too. Personally i've had better luck with my tanks going with the 40ppm idea. That's not to say i've never let them get as high as 100ppm, but I do try not to let them get above 40ppm.

I have maintained less than 20ppm in all my FW tank.
Less than 40ppm for NO3 should be perfect as long as you don't have problems and you keep a regular water change/cleaning schedule.

It only gets to 40 the last day or so before the water change ...
