![]() | No cycling? |
Mitchee![]() Enthusiast Posts: 176 Kudos: 75 Votes: 99 Registered: 12-Dec-2005 ![]() ![]() | Hi everyone Two days ago, I set up a 5 gallon tank, using about 1 gallon of cycled water from my 42g and the rest straight tap water (conditioned of course). No other media was used to seed the 5g. Currently, I have only 2 platies in the 5g. My water parameters are amonia 0, nitrIte 0, nitrAte 10. As there is the presence of nitrAte, can I safely assume that my 5g will not undergo a cycle or should I wait a little longer? Thank you! *Mitch* |

Actually while your thought was in the right direction, it was not "spot on." What you should have put in the new tank was a handfull of gravel from the old tank and not the water. The bacteria colonies that you are trying to grow in the new tank live primarely in the gravel and in the filter, not in the water itself. It's more likely that the nitrates came from the 1 gallon of established tank water you put in there. Joe Potato ![]() |

You might want to test it and while everyone says 40ppm is safe I would prefer to keep it below 20ppm. |
