Hi everyone

Two days ago, I set up a 5 gallon tank, using about 1 gallon of cycled water from my 42g and the rest straight tap water (conditioned of course). No other media was used to seed the 5g. Currently, I have only 2 platies in the 5g. My water parameters are amonia 0, nitrIte 0, nitrAte 10. As there is the presence of nitrAte, can I safely assume that my 5g will not undergo a cycle or should I wait a little longer?

Thank you!

Hi,
Personally, I'd wait.
Actually while your thought was in the right direction,
it was not "spot on." What you should have put in the
new tank was a handfull of gravel from the old tank and
not the water. The bacteria colonies that you are trying
to grow in the new tank live primarely in the gravel and
in the filter, not in the water itself.

I agree with Frank on this, with one added point: don't believe the nitrate reading is the result of bacteria in the 5 gallon working on the waste produced by the platies. It's more likely that the nitrates came from the 1 gallon of established tank water you put in there.

I just added a good handful of gravel to my 5g. Thanks so much for your help!

If you get 10nitrates just from 1 gallon of water from another tank plus 4g of zero nitrate water I really wonder what your nitrates are on the other tank. You might want to test it and while everyone says 40ppm is safe I would prefer to keep it below 20ppm.
