in my ten gal i have what looks like an oil slick. rainbow color ,thicker liquid with lots of bubbles in it. water readings normal. baby convict in the tank is fine. i thought it was from a broke flower pot i put in. i removed it a month ago. it was a walmart taracotta pot with no glaze. it was well rinsed before hand. the tank has many plants java moss, sword.. drift wood as in all my tanks. i remove it by skiming the surface. it just keeps coming back. does anyone have a idea what it could be. help

What is your feeding schedule like. Could it be coming from something like that?

The buildup is most likely just organic buildup from fish waste and/or over feeding...What is your bio-load? What fish do you have in your tank?

Hi,
The film is normal in many aquariums. It comes from
not having a full cover over the tank and the accumulation
of household odors. Oils from frying, broiling foods, smoke
from cooking and smoking in the area of the tanks, and
lastly, from the foods that we feed the fish.

There are a few ways of removing it.

Laying a paper towel on the surface of the water and
allowing the towel to just get damp and then removing it.
The towel will absorb the oils and are carried off trapped
in the towel. Do this several times with a fresh sheet
each time until the film is broken up.

Some folks will add an airstone to the tank. The bubbles
from the airstone will break up the film into small
particles which then combine with dust and other detritus
and fall the the bottom of the tank where they are siphoned
off during weekly tank maintenance.

Frank

As mentioned there are many ways it can be introduced into the tank, food, plant breakdown, water supply, and household problems.

First you must establish where it is coming from or otherwise it will continue no matter what you do to remove.
One method is to syphon from the top extremly carefully, to do this there must be no water movement what so ever. the other is to break it up with a very good airation as Frank suggested. There is a product called GEO liquid it is actually an extremly fine natural product from China this collects the fine particles and stores it in your filtration system. I am not say this will work but it just might help in collecting all the oil particles after the airation breaks it up.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
