Yes, chlorine is bad, chlorine is the devil-- but when I change water, it's quite annoying to have to fill a bucket with tap, disinfect, and then pour into the aquarium (I'm too weak!! . Is is possible to just siphon tap into the aquarium and then dechlorinate quickly afterwards, or will it like, start the adverse effects almost immediately? After a year of fishkeeping, you'd think I'd have figured it out, but I do'nt think it's worth risking my fishies, so I'll just sound stupid and ask...

There is no such thing as a stupid question.

You don't need to add the dechlor straight into the bucket. Some aquarists will, but unless the fish are supersensitive, it doesn't matter too much if you pour the water right into the tank and add dechlor.

Unless you're dealing with discus or senstive fry or something, it's not that big of a deal. Or I'd say, if you are taking a rather large amount out.

While you siphon the new water in, you can add the dechlor at the same time, if its really too much of a hassle to add it into a bucket.

Hi,
Same as Ferret.. Always ask.

I've been keeping/breeding tropical fish since the 50s.
When I do a water change usually weekly, I change out
about 10-20% of the tank at a time. I use a python to
syphon out the old water and then reverse the flow to
add new. I take care to match the temperatures, but
for the rest, it is of no general consequence at only
10-20% of the entire tank. After draining the desired
amount of water, I add the chlorine/chloramine remover,
and then reverse the flow to fill the tank. The mixing
currents of the new water mix the remover, and thats
all there is to it.
