One of the nutrients for algae (and plants and animals) is Phosphate. Controlling its quantity can be important. Check out this site: http://webpages.charter.net/kwingerden/erhs/aquarium/infophos.htm While it is a commercial blurb for the companies test kit, it does go into detail about the importance of phosphates in water. I used one and it promptly decimated my Clown Loach population...only 1 survivor. It can be dangerous to your more sensitive fish. check this site out too..... http://www.cam.org/~tomlins/algae.html mainly about algae removal but might give you some ideas.
