	Question regarding phosphate
betahex Fish Addict Posts: 864 Kudos: 352 Votes: 0 Registered: 11-Jul-2001	i'm seeing more and more "phosphate removing pouches" being sold at most pet stores and i was wondering what phosphates do to your aquarium? is it really that important to remove phosphates?

FRANK Moderator Posts: 5108 Kudos: 5263 Votes: 1690 Registered: 28-Dec-2002	Hi, Folks with unplanted tanks, or very sparcely planted tanks will frequently have problems with algae outbreaks. One of the nutrients for algae (and plants and animals) is Phosphate. Controlling its quantity can be important. Check out this site: http://webpages.charter.net/kwingerden/erhs/aquarium/infophos.htm While it is a commercial blurb for the companies test kit, it does go into detail about the importance of phosphates in water. It can be dangerous to your more sensitive fish. check this site out too..... http://www.cam.org/~tomlins/algae.html mainly about algae removal but might give you some ideas. Cheers, James.
