My kh is @ 2 degrees....I'm running co2 for the plants but I'm a bit concerned about the MTS that I have in the tank....their shells seem to be damaged a bit....any suggestions on what to add for them .

Bicarb of Soda!

But I am reluctant to advise over what quantities to add - best method would be to take some of your water, and conduct some experiments yourself to achieve the results you want

Hi Babel,
You can use Sodium Bicarbonate. I use the "Arm & Hammer"
brand. Just be sure that it is the unscented type.
I'd bring the KH up between 3 & 5.
With snails, they need Calcium (Ca) for their shells
and that would come from water that was around the
same values for GH as for KH.

This is baking powder we're talking right ....

okay...then like all things I'm assuming this is something I want to increase gradually ?

And it is the co2 making it drop right will it then spike back up if I lapse in the co2

Yes, once you figure how much total mass is needed to alter your tank volume, I'd add enough to change the levels a little every few days.

Bicarbonate of Soda is an ingredient of baking powder, but this also contains acidic cream of tartar, and I don't think you want this in your fish water..

I found a [link=link]http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/CO2/hardness-larryfrank.html" style="COLOR: #BA55D3[/link] to help you with your last question, and while I am sure it can be explained simply, I'll leave that challenge to you at this time of night... But, I think that the answers are Yes, and Yes
