I heard someone say at our LFS that Poly____ something or another removes nitrate and other stuff from the water very effectively and he said that they use it in the huge aquariums people visit.

Can anyone tell me waht it is?

Don't believe everything you hear...

Nitrates, unless there's a very high amount, are not killers but sometimes will contribute to algae growth.

A few partial water changes should reduce nitrates the natural way if they become a problem.

Water changes are the only way to remove nitrAtes. Plants can consume it, but often not in the quatities that would reduce the ammount of water changes that would need to be preformed. There is a plant hygrophilia polysperma that is a fast growing and will therefore consume nitrates more quickly than something that grows slowly like java fern. However...
There is Nothing that will reduce the necessity of doing water changes.

Thank you Gary and Babel.

I wasnt trying to suggest that you dont do water changes if you put this 'nitrate removal stuff' in.

Babel that plant looks like a good plant for me.

*goes off to order some*

The filter material you are thinking of is called Polyfilter and comes as a sheet which you cut to make it fit whatever filter you have ,it changes colour depending on what substances it is absorbing e.g heavy metals and nitrates change it different colours.I bought some when i had a nitrate problem in a small tank but in the end just did multiple water changes over a week and added some hornwort to get it back down to normal levels.

Gibson SG you know you want one!!
