Hi, Iam on a well in maine, and in the tap water there is a slight trace of arsenic, so we dont drink it, but we do take showers, brush out teeth wash dishes, all that stuff in it. For drinking water we have a small spicket of filtered water which ony gives out about 2 gallons every hour so that makes water changes and filling new tanks very difficult, any ideas??

Thanks

You could buy a filtration system for your water. Just an idea I really dont know if that would remove it though you would have to do some research on it. May be costly however.

reverse osmosis?

How about filling a larger bin, spare tank, or etc and running a filter with carbon?

Is this filtration system RO? It definitely sounds like it. RO units do run very slowly unless you pay out a fair amount of cash to get a big system or big storage tank. You could set aside a container to hold water and plan ahead by running water from that system into the container. I just set up my ro system and it is very slow. I rubberband the handle so it keeps running and leave it to fill my water containers so I can do water changes the next day. The only problem is forgetting to switch containers. It also has a storage tank which it fills automatically when not in use but the storage tank isn't even enough water for the smaller tanks much less the 90g.
You would have to add something like kent's ro right to the ro water to use it.
Otherwise it might work to filter the well water with alot of carbon or something stronger like purigen before putting it in the tank.

I just bought a RO filter syster - will install it this weekend. Mine has a storage tank that will hold, perhaps five to six gallons. I plan to use extra one gallon rubbermaid containers to store the water from the tank once it fills, refills, etc. I don't know of anything else that would work for arsnenic.

I know this is a little off the subject, but you said that you do not drink the water because there is a trace amount in the water. The arsenic is getting into YOUR system not jsut through you drinking it. Everytime you take a shower your skin absorbs the water which means it absorbs the arsenic too. Everytime you brush your teeth I bet you swallow it no matter what you do and your mouth absorbs some of whatever is in your mouth before you get a chance to swallow as well. You wash your dishes with it which means it is on your dishes that you eat off of and cook with so you are getting it there too. You wash your slothes in to which once again absorbs into your skin. I know people think it is not that big of a deal but it does not take much arsenic to harm a person. I hope there are no children or elderly people that use this water source considering they are much more sensitive to problems. Maybe you should talk to someone about filtering your well or something. I guarantee if you do not have problems from it right now, you will in the future. So don't just think of your fish. Think of your family and yourself as well!

I can give you a prime example of why this bothers me.
If you go to Mexico you would NEVE Rdrink the water. People will tell you do not even brush your teeth with this water because it WILL make you sick! There is no maybe about it.
I work for a doctor who specializes in Nutrition and would tell you flat out DO NOT USE THIS WATER AT ALL!!! Even if you do not drink it You are still in contact with it and are still being hurt by it.

If you do not believe me think about it.... has anyone in your family been sicker than normal? Have they had problems they have never had before? I bet you will say yes. This would be similar to mercury poisoning in a way. People come into contact with it all the time thinking that trace amounts will not hurt them, which they may not if it was jsut once or twice in their life, but everyday you deal with it several times a day. It will hurt you.

You should look into something IMMEDIATELY because this will hurt you

Long-time exposure to the toxin by humans has been linked to skin, lung, bladder and kidney cancer and can also lead to fatal cardiovascular and nervous system breakdowns. One of the noticeable symptoms is black flecking on the skin.

Arsenic will be effectively be removed by RO filters but its not really a cheap option.

check this link out, sounds interesting .
