I just got my 20 gallon tank and and have 4 mollies in it right now. It is in the process of cycling. It doesn't have a top right now. I have had it running for 3 days now. The water smells pretty bad and it seems to be smelling the whole apartment up. My readings for ammonia are approximatley .35. Does not having a cover make the smell difuse easier? Any suggestions on how to get the smell under control. My girlfriend is getting upset. Thanks

Jamie

Do you have a filter running?. Your tank water shouldn't have a bad smell.
Yes, if it's open, the smell will diffuse faster.

By smell, what smell is it exactly
A cycling tank will have a distinctive smell from the ammonia.
Some people are more perceptive towards it than others. If it is the ammonia it will go away in a few more days .

All tanks (IMO) should be covered. Not only does it reduce water loss, and humidity issues but more importantly reduces the likelyhood of any fish ending up on the floor .

No cover fits the tank for some reason. So I am in process of building one. I have a penguin 150 running. I think I overfed a bit so I am doing some gravel vacs to get any excess food

Lawnboy41, if you havent read about the cycling process you NEED to do that. You can do that by clicking [link=this handy dandy quick and easy Link]http://www.fishprofiles.net/faq/begin-cycling.asp" style="COLOR: #EB4288[/link].
By doing gravel vacs and excessive waterchanges at this point you are actually making it take longer than necessary.
What are your ammonia, nitrIte and nitrAte readings as of today?

Hmmm you should start to see a rise in the nitrIte fairly soon. But since you'd been doing water changes it's likely to take longer. Hold off on the water changes unless the fish begin to show signs of stress...the smelly ammonia bit only lasts for a few days IME.
