Does anyone know if nitrifying bacteria regenerate or grow faster from a used filter that has been dry for a period of time?

I have a 40 gal with a magnum cannister and 2 biowheels- I moved last year and the biowheel paper filters were dry for 6 months. Cannister filter sleeve is brand new.

Tank has been running now for 10 days with 2 zebrafish that I have been feeding daily.

Ammonia tested today showed 0.0.

Bacteria isn't a just add water thing. You'll want to clean off the old wheels using plain tap water (no soap ect) and cycle the tank as usual. If they had been in use on a cycled tank they would have been seeded reducing time and stress on the fish.

Reading back over the first post 2 zebra danios in a 4 gallon wont' really provide enough ammonia that the tank can fully cycle before it's stocked with more fish. 10 days into cycling and ammonia is gone with nitrItes present. Once the nitrItes drop and you've nitrAtes present your of course cycled. However the bacteria will likely be so little that you may have a minicycle as you start stocking the tank.
