I was doing a test with Potassium Permanganate (APPlus Anti-Fluke). I took 5 gallons of my tank water and put it into a bucket. I used 50 drops, (5cc) and in a matter of 30 maybe 40 mins the water turned Brown. Does this mean I have bad stuff in my water or maybe a lot of good stuff too? I would like to dip my fish and not treat my whole tank, but if the tank needs the treatment more, then I am thinking, maybe i should take out the fish that can't handle the meds and treat the tank, clean the water up and replace the fish, while treating the fish that can handle it at the same time. Also, if when turning brown, meaning meds are not working, do I just keep adding more medication? This stuff is very confusing to me.

Hi,
At first I became confused in reading your question.
I could not figure out what you were testing for that
you were adding Potassium Permanganate to the water.
That compound is a strongly oxidizing agent and is used
to remove iron and manganese from water. From what I
can find, it will cause the elements to participate out,
and I was thinking that the resultant color change was
because of the precipitant.

Then I realized that you were going to treat the fish
for the disease, and that you were wondering about the
rest of the tank.

If you are concerned, I would write (email) the
manufacturer of the medication, and describe your "test"
and your concerns. Be sure to tell them in your
communications what type(s) of fish are in the tank as
many fish have vastly different tolerances to medications.

I also suspect that somewhere on the bottle it will say
to remove any carbon from the tank filter during the
medication period.

Frank

Yes, it says all that (remove carbin) But know where did it tell me it was going to change colors. I whated to know why and when looking it up, I found that the agent wasn't working. It tells me to let fish sit for 4 hours. However the honey color is deadly to fish if in to long (and that is in 30 mins), they can't breath, it isn't oxygenating (sp?) anylonger. PP from what I have read is very very tricky. I am going to treat all fish but the scaleless ones. I wanted to test product so I know what I was in for. I also read that HP will reverse the action of the PP. I just can’t find out what to do when color changes, do I add more, take fish out, keep fish in, let fish die, (jk) start over, clean big tank cause that seems to have a lot of bad crap in water (maybe)?

Hi,
Is this the product that you are discussing?

http://aq-products.com/Catalog/Liquid%20Medications/Antifluke.htm

The directions seem pretty clear on how to treat the
tank to remove the infestation. You might want to
purchase the biozime mentioned in the instructions
in case the nitrifying bacteria are killed off during
the treatment.

I don't notice any mention of Potassium Permanganate
in this list of ingredients:
http://www.thatpetplace.com/MainPro/ItemdyPop.aspx?T1=AP0184

If you have a fluke infestation, then this seems like
a pretty straight forward medication, and the instructions
seem straight forward as well.

Sorry, the med was Aquatronics, Flukes Control. Ingredients: Potassium Permanganate. Last night I did treat one of my fish and I know the pink lasted at least 40 mins. I think it was my lighting that made it seem honey-brown color.

Hi,
I'm glad that its working and that your concerns have
been eased. Good luck with the treatment and I hope
the fish all come through just fine.

thank you Frank, but I am not sure about treatment. See my link under Hospital, Rainbow hated the treatment and just about ended his life over it.
