Hi Everyone,
I went to my friends home today to do a test on her nitrate level. I noticed when she took the water sample she did so from the water at the top of the tank.
Whenever I check my water I hold the vial closed till I'm at least inbetween the middle and bottom of the tank and then let the vial fill.
Is there a 'set rule' to where you should be taking your water from when testing?

Any comments appreciated.
Cheers

I don't think there is a true set rule but I think that things will be more concentrated closer to the bottem.

I had two tests done today, one from the top of the tank and one from the bottom, they both came back with the same reading.

Conclusion : I dont think it really matters where you take the water from.

I always take water from the top of my tanks to do the tests.

I think it doesn't make any difference.

It should not matter where you test it! From a chemistry standpoint, a solution should have the same concentration whereever you test

Well not everything stays in solution in an equal concentration. However if you have enough circulation on your tank to keep it filtered the water should all be mixed until it's equal.

The only time I could possibly think of doing a deep water test would be if I started having sudden deaths. The other time would be a very tall 5+ft tall tank. The water should be very close to the same providing you have a good foltration, and water movement with good airation.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
