is there any way you can describe the smell?

It sounds kinda normal to me, cuz i know that fishtanks dont smell like fresh tap water.

You need to change less water more often. Say 20% once or twice a week.

Hi,
John is correct as he describes the possible smell
of a tank. In looking at your picture, perhaps it
is the quality of the photograph, but the water looks
cloudy to me. The center seems clear but the cloudiness
shows to the right hand side where the inside filter
takes on a bluish cloudiness. There are not enough
plants in the tank to make any difference, the water
level is a bit low, and I agree with John that weekly
water changes of 10-20% are needed. Wholesale (large)
water changes are not going to resolve the underlying
problem.

Frank

r0B3y,

Think a 20% water change twice a week. When people mention minimum water changes, do the maximum minimum water change, your fish will love it.

Use the crystals or conditioner with each water change. Follow the label directions. If possible err on the side of too little as opposed to too much...

yes, dont forget to vacuum up the poop. bad bacteria can multiply FAST and make all your fish quite ill.

I agree, fish tank water will not smell like tap water, but you should not be able to smell it if the the tank is covered and even if you are sitting right next to it. And definitely no wet dog smells. 20% water change atleast once a week, or 10% twice a week. Whatever suits you best.

I've found more frequent water change, less chemicals in the water and giving the fish tank a place to breath. Has helped me with the smell of my aquarium. My really doesnt have a smell anymore.

Activated carbon added somewhere in the tank or filter will remove odors...

The amount added is determined by the slow elimination of odor.

The easy way out is activated carbon with few water changes...

The difficult way is to change water frequently.

More importantly is to discover the source of the odor and eliminate it.
