I just bought a test kit today, i know i am a very bad girl, i have always bought the little individual tests, but now i own my own big (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, ph) test kit. But my nitrate numbers made me very nervous . Here are my parameters: (I also want to reduce my pH)
pH: 7.4
Nitrate: 80 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Ammonia: 0 ppm

High, but nothing serious depending on the fish you keep.
I was shocked to see the results on my pond too ! Doing more frequent rather than a massive water change is generally better. Fish can become acclimated to high nitrAte situations. And do as much of a gravel vac as your plants will allow.

And for what it's worth, if you want something to suck up nitrates, try adding a piece or two of hornwort to your tank - just let it float, it'll do the rest.
