I started a new thread about this because I wanted to make sure people who saw the first post would reply to this one. Thought you may not go back and check the other one if youd read it already.

My son put lotion in my 5 gallon hex fry tank last Friday. I tried to net what I could out but it broke up in the water. I rinsed the filter which had just been in there a day or so.

Problem is now my substrate has a white, cotton like mold looking substance on it. Since this is a hex tank, its longer than it is wide and I cant do a gravel vac. How do I get this off and what could it be? How do I do gravel vacs in the future? I just bought a gravel vac that hooks up to my faucet and Im hoping it will work. I have to get an adapter for it to fit my faucet first. If this is the lotion in the tank molding, I cant possible get it all out without breaking down this tank. If you guys dont think its the lotion, what could it be? Food? Im feeding them First Bites and frozen, thawed out baby brine shrimp. Should I get a whole new filter? What about the bio wheel? This is one of the new tanks with the filter built in. Im thinking Im going to have to just break the whole thing down.

You can still do a gravel vac .

Sounds like you've got a similar tank to mine. It's too narrow to start the siphoning process the normal way of tipping the water up so you'll either need to purchase a smaller gravel vac (check online if your local shops havent got one) or start the siphon the old fashioned way. Either submerge the entire siphon into the tank then pull the end out with your thumb over the hose, or suck slowly while watching and get your thumb over the end (and out of your mouth!) the moment the water clears the top of the tank.
Is it just me or is tank water slightly sweet .

Suck on the pipe & you'll get the sipon going. If i where you, i would do a gravel vac. immediatly & eliminate the white stuff on the gravel.

I went ahead and broke the tank down and cleaned everything. Im guessing what I was seeing that looked like mold was left over food. There was tons of this stuff in the water. It was on my plants and decor. The filter cartridge smelled as did the open tank. I only saw two dead fry so I guess the lotion didnt hurt them.
