Hey all, i've got a problem with a fine dust of white particles all over the tank. Its not affecting fish health or water quality, it just makes everything in the tank look fuzzy under the light- its realy quite ugly. I'm filtering with an AQ300 sponge & carbon, 15-20% weekly changes, 50% of that RO water to ballance out the ph on my very hard, very high pH (8.1) tap watter. I also have a peice of mopani wood and a coconut shell in the tank, but the white particles seemed to start well after adding either one. Any sugestions?

I get that same "dandruff" all over the tank look when my filter needs changed or for what ever reason the filtering has slowed down, like if the intake is clogged by plants bits or such. Give every thing a check again maybe thats your problem.

the white particles can be micro-organism living in your water,
don't have to worry about it if it's not affecting the health of your fish

hmm that could be it,i have very hard water from a sediment valley, and i wouldn't wonder what else comes along. I broke down and did some bouts with water clarifier, using polyester batting to capture the particles- thats gotten half of them out but there's still some floating around. I'm considering doing another round in a week or two. If they are micro organisms is there any way of getting rid of them that won't kill plants or mess with the quality of the water?

try a vortex diatom filter ,that will get rid of nearly everything suspended in your tank.(atleast for a while)

Gibson SG you know you want one!!

Use an old britta water filter.
You can use this over and over again and is perfect for this sort of thing.

filter floss is the cheapest method to remove particles from the water. just remember to change it when it gets "full"

I've gone over to using polyester now and just rinsing it out every 24 hours. I think the problem is the frozen brine shrimp, they seem to make the problem worse every time. Does anyone know of a better method for getting small particles that isn't too difficult?

you can get filter floss at your lfs and that is a good method for removing small particles out of your water. just put a little in your filter and take it out when it gets clogged. it's also extremely cheap to buy

ya, i think filter floss/polyester is what i'm going to do from now on, seems to get rid of some of the particles. I think i'm going to try water clarifier again and stop feeding brine shrimp, then see if it comes back

i just got some filter fiber,so do i just put it in my filter box along with my standard carbon filter pad or should i have just the fiber in my box?
i ask this because right now with both in there, the water is starting to rise up in the one corner so i pulled the intake tube half way out to bring the water level back down.im going to be going on vacation soon and am not looking forward to having a wet carpet or an electrical fire when i return.

leave it out on vacation, i rinse mine every 24 hours or it becomes ugly and useless, and might actualy take on some of the bacteria culture over a long period of time.

my filters have never overflowed when using filter floss, but if you're going on vacation, you can get to it when you get back
