GRRRR I cant stop it from happening. Any time i dose the tank with ferts. should I stop adding ferts or should I just decrease them. Its the recomended dose on the flourish bottle so I am wondering if I dont have enough plants. But I have a bunch of plants in the 29 and i am still getting the brown stuff that i am getting in the 27 but the 27 is also getting the black stuff that wont come off of the plant leaves so I am worried about adding plants because the black algae keeps building up on leaves. What should I do??

Details, details, details

You have to give us a little more to go by.

What exactly are you dosing, how often, how much?
Lighting type, wattage, duration?

The brown stuff are diatoms (most likely) and based on high silica. How long is the tank set up? Substrate type?

The black one sounds like black beard algae (BBA).

I know you provide some info in other threads, but try to get all info required into this one as members do not really like having to hunt them down

sorry baby is very unhappy ...

i have a 27 and a 29 that i was dosing once a week after the water changes the directions on the flourish say 1-2 times a week.

All my levels are great 0 0 20ish and am doing 50% water changes every sunday.

all light is 10-12 hours depending on when i wake up I dont have any timers. The 29 has the most plants and has a gravel substraight medium grade with 17w all glass aquarium broad spectrum light on it. In there is ludwiga doing great and wisteria trees and another un identified plant thats just like the standard plastic plant but only live, there is also a mellon sword some dwarf hairgrass micro swords and some java fern. The brown/diatoms are on the bottom and sides at the bottom. there are between 6 and 8 ottos in here i dont know the exact count cause i can never see them all at once. It is being filtered with an aquaclear 50 and has diy yeast co2 on it. there is VERY little brown/diatoms and is mostly on the gravel but is on teh glass in some spots.

the 27 has an aquaclear 150 and it is also diy yeast co2 both of them have it being injected into the filter on the nifty hose sized hole in the plate above the impeller. It has 60w grow light above it and has several plants in it including a little wisteria some sword looking thing thats un id'd mondo grass banana plant dwarf hari grass micro sword javamoss etc not heavily planted really but trying to get it to grow in but the puffer keeps nipping at the plants because of the Blackbeard algae. The plants are infested with it, the glass gets green spot and diatoms and i have been scraping it off and rubbing the leaves to no avail. This tank has a coral base and i dont much like it but worry about changing it because i dont want to worry about the fish dying cause the levels go nuts. So i am waiting till the 20 is cycled then i will move the more delecate fish out so that i can break it down and change the substraight and add a ton of plants.

the 2.5 gallon UGF is infested with the blue green green spot diatoms etc. It has a screw in floressent aquarium light and has the same plants as the rest and they are all covered and i cant get the algae to stop growing no matter what i do water changes every three days at 50% and i even resulted to algacide which i hate to do but it still didnt work. Its taking over... i am thinking of getting a LARGE snail to put in there, or mabee the snails from the brackish water tank to see if they will eat it and propagate so i can feed them to the puffer... do you think the snails would do the trick in there? shouild i get large snails for the other tanks to aid in the cleanup of these blooms?

sorry if this is hard to read my son is freaking out and wants me to stand up and hold him but my back isnt liking that

mrwizerd,

If your data is right then I can comment on the first tank (29G) directly:

Not enough light. You seem to have mostly brown slime (diatoms) and they thrive in these conditions. You say you have 17W over 29G - that is barely half a watt per gallon.

The other tanks I don't know yet, maybe others will jump in and help out. Somehow I think it is not sufficient to add ONLY Flourish, but I will check later.

Hi,
Here is a site about algae, why we get it, and how to
control it:

[link=http://www.otocinclus.com/articles/algae.html]http://www.otocinclus.com/articles/algae.html" style="COLOR: #FF00FF[/link]

And a site specifically on Green Water:

[link=http://www.otocinclus.com/articles/greenwater.html]http://www.otocinclus.com/articles/greenwater.html" style="COLOR: #FF00FF[/link]

Follow their suggestions, and I venture to say that you
will see the algae back under control in no time. Well,
almost no time.

Frank
