What is the appropriate community tank ph level? I have a pair of angels and probably 2 small schools of tetra in a 55 gallon tank. my fish are happy, or so my parents tell me, my angels keep laying eggs... they would like to know what the appropriate ph is for this type of setup. thanks-steph

Whatever it is now sounds like its working

The best answer i can give sounds like a cop-out, but it is actually the truth.

The best pH is a stable one.

Most captive bred fish can adjust to a pH within the 6.0-8.4 mark, but they will not handle a fluctuating pH with nearly as much grace. In fact, its a sure-fire way to cause stress, and with stress comes disease.

you can adjust it, but if you want to, i'd want to do a bit more testing first, and check your decor and filter media to make sure that is not having an effect, and then i'd be using natural means to change it

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

Typically angelfish and South American tetras would prefer soft water that is slightly acidic. However, many fish species have been bred in captivity and have become acclimated to hard. alkaline water.

Since you and your parents will do water changes with available water, the best answer will be the pH of your tap water.
