Just find the specific gravity you need and just add little by little until you reach the proper level.

Hi
You will need a Hyrgometer to measure the Specific Gravity
of the water. Any LFS that sells Marine salts and, or, Salt
water fish should have a variety for sale.

When you have it at 1.010 to 1.015 the water
will contain the correct amount of salt.

Then all you need to do is premix whatever amount you
will be changing with your routine tank maintenance.

Find out the requirements of the fish you're keeping. I started out with 1 tablespoon per gallon and adjusted from there. Definitely get a hydrometer

Definitely depends on the fish you are keeping, some prefer the lower end of brackish, closer to 1.005, while others prefer higher amounts of salt. When you buy a hydrometer, make sure it measures all the way down to 1.001.

Some "brackish" fish, actually just prefer salt added to their tanks. Many of the gobies, do great and even breed well with the 1 Tbls per 5 gallons. Just make sure you know the requirements of you paticular fish.

Good point, and just further proves why it's a good idea to thoroughly research any fish you're looking at buying, that way you know what you're getting into.
