the best way to cure this "issue" is get a 300, and put 2 full-grown dovii in it, or you can keep the cat outa the room w/ the tanks and use glass lids

Healthwise probably not too bad. I would discourage it because I wouldn't want kitty treating the tank like a sushi bar at some stage in the future.

Also kitty's interest may cause damage breakage to the tank. If it slips it may fall in and smash lids or knock stuff.

Thanks Leslie, for snitching on Simba and Cleo Yes, it was my kitties who had a drinking problem...they just loved Sushi Water...

There is nothing wrong with them drinking the water, and really not much wrong for the fish from my experience Keep up with your water changes, and you might have to add water to the tank a little more often

Just keep little kittie inside, and don't let her near any toxic chemicals, especially antifreeze...otherwise you and little kittie will suffer tremendously... Heidi

Hi,
Our cats don't like to drink the water.
However, One likes to go "fishing" when I change the water.
She will perch with three legs on the edges of the
tank over the center and swipe at the fish as they go by.
I used to swear that one day she was going to go swimming!

The other would not go near a body of water if her life
depended upon it.

When we travel, (we have a van) we place their buda box
in the way back along with two metal "non tip over"
dog food bowls.
In one we put dry cat food (they are "grazers" and in
the other we put ice cubes. That way, as the ice
melts, they always have water, and yet it does not
slosh out on the turns of the mountain roads.

At home, we got tired of the howling, nasty stares, and
bad attitude when the proper attention to their drinking
water was not available. So we purchased one of the drinking
fountians with a large reservoir, and now even they are
happy...

There might be "something" a cat could catch from a fish tank, if it's unkemp etc. And I'm not totally sure how good all those different water conditioners are for cats to be drinking. Chemicals can do strange things.

I would also worry about the cats tongue in the water, or the fur in the water. Cats mouths have a TREMENDOUS amount of bacteria inside of them, this includes on their tongue, touching your tank water.

Keep your fish tank out of reach, raise it up, or get a glass canopy, they are not that expensive.

You can also try getting a drinking fountain for your kitty for about $30-40 at a pet store, it's kept cool, it's filtered and doesn't use much electricity. It will encourage your kitty to drink more, for good health as well.

it was on a table next to the widowsil , where he could get up and drink it. we are going to get a glass lid but at the moment it is duracel wrapped on cardboard. the filter sits on the top of the glass tank so the lid is a funny sape and he gets it from there. now we moved the tank and it is unexcessable to him. our water doesn't have chline or any thing bad in it - he drinks that too. we have the best water in NZ so i don't think that the chlrine thing would have any thing to do with his facination.

I'd be more worried about cat hair in the tanks!

Honestly, there is absolutely nothing wrong with cats (or humans even) drinking tank water, providing it is well maintained and not full of every chemical known to fishkeeping

Both of our cats love cold water with ice. We have a large cup that we leave on the floor that we fill up a couple of times a day. If it hasn't been "refreshed", they just sit by the cup and look at us like we forgot to do something terrible.

Cats don't like the small of chlorine, that's why they prefer to drink water from puddles, toilets and in your case, fish tanks. Perhaps you can give your cat water that have been let to stand for a while your cat won't be interested in your tank water anymore.

I have a friend who's two cats would go out of their way to drink the sushi water from the tank and ignore their water dish. But the tank was on a counter where the cats could get up to easily. Since her tanks are now on tank stands, they have no choice but to drink their own water.

Where is the tank located that a kitten can get to it?

We-ell...something tells me that your tank water is a little nicer than toilet water...so it shouldn't be TOO big of a problem.

But well, I'd seriously consider paying the small price of glass canopies, they reduce evaporation, fishy suicide, and they'll keep that kitty out too.

To be honest, you could drink the tank water if the tank is well maintained...

Not to worry. Cats will drink mud water and survive without problems. If you were a cat and smelled fish, you'd drink the water too.
