divertran Fish Addict Posts: 784 Kudos: 469 Votes: 165 Registered: 14-Nov-2004	OK here's a question. my 10 gal puffer tank didn't work out and the little guys didn't make it. how long can the tank sit, filter and heater running before the bacteria dies off? I'm thinkin about getting more fish for it but can't do that for a few more days. I'm prolly gonna hafta re-cycle it right?

sham Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3369 Kudos: 2782 Votes: 98 Registered: 21-Apr-2004	For a small tank drop in a bit of fish food as if you were still feeding the puffers. That will keep the bacteria alive. Bacteria will die within a day of having no food but will probably find a few remains of fish waste that are still decaying and keep a very small amount alive for a couple days. Adding a little fish food will at least keep the tank mostly cycled so you don't have to start over. If you restock slowly you might not even see ammonia.
