I always have diatoms show up when I set up a new tank without putting much light on it. The only tank I left low light and no plants had columns of it coming out of the sand and strings hanging off the caves. ![]() |

I also doubt your diatoms were as bad as mine ![]() Remove as much as you can by hand, and well add plants and more light, should take care of the problem. You'd probably be better off looking for an algae eater that would survive with the cichlids and not putting quite that much light on there. Over 1-1.5wpg should keep the diatoms away and grow green algae instead. 2wpg or more and not doing a fairly heavily planted tank is going to give you tons of green algae. I decide I prefer planted tanks over agressive cichlid tanks so I only keep less destructive cichlids now. |
