I just found out that my new peppermint bristlenoses do not like the wardley algae wafers I have been dropping in the tank of a night.

I got home last night to discover that they no longer algae wafers. They are now golfball sized fuzzy smelly (o my lord they smell bad) explosive balls that stick to anubias leafs very well.

If I so much as touch one it explodes into a million bits and murks up the water.

It is more than likely some sort of hair algae. My BNs are still swimming around and so are the rummy noses in the tank.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of this nuisance before it starts to make my fish sick? All I have been doing is scooping up the filth with my net and removing plants and cutting my losses and taking the entire leaf of the anubias with one of the puff balls attached.

I dosed the water last night with methalyne blue last night. Dunno if it will help or not.

Can anyone else think of something?

Sounds like a massive dose of bacteria you have there. I have no idea of what it is at all.

My suggestions would be no feeding for at least three days.
Remove and wash all your filter material (naturaly in tank water)
Remove the leaves very carefully. The plant will continue to grow.

Do a 15% water change about every 4-5 day for several weeks.

Add a good Bio Starter at each water change. Sera Make a good product for that. This will bring back your good bacteria.

Finally reduce your feeding program or otherwise it could happen again.

I hope this little bit helps you.

Have you tried removing the algae-food-etc. balls with a siphon/gravel vac?

Yep I have.

I have been doing it for the last two nights. Im pleased to report that when I came home today there were no more wardley fuzzballs in my tank.

At the moment I have 5 x 1.5 inch bns in the tank and 6 rummynose tetras.

Tomorrow I will send some plants to my friends big tank so I can at least see around my tank. This will also mean that I will have to put in a few more objects for hiding places.

I'll be able to keep a good eye on things then.

Thanks for your time and replies Keith & Tryst.

No troubles at all, that is what we all should do help each other.

Hi,
I used one of those types of products early on with this
30G tank and would up with a heck of an algae problem.

Now that your problem is resolved, I suggest that you
might want to feed your critters some ordinary zucchini,
or cucumber. Slice them into pices that resemble pickle
spears, and set them on the bottom of the tank. Sometimes
they may try to float, so I bubberband them to a small
piece of rock to hold them down where the catfish can
get to them.

I have tried zuchini before and it gets everywhere too though....guess I was boiling it too long.

Hi Troy,
"Boiling it to much?"
You don't cook the stuff. You can feed it to them
raw, or at the most, blanch it. That is stick it in
boiling water for not more than a minute.

ah I had it in for 2. The corys used to attack it and send it everywhere. It was fun to watch but a bugger to clean.

I just put it in the microwave in a small dish with some tank water in it for about 30 secs. Fast and easy. :88)

BN, corys, otos all get a bunch of different veggies and their tankmates like to munch on them too. I haven't tried them on pumpkin or squash, will try it out. What is a choko? Some weird slang or something?
