Hello,
I am not sure if I am in the right form or not.

I currently live in Los Angeles, where my GH is 7. I am moving to Las Vegas where without a water softner, water GH is 14.

but here is my question.

is the water at 14 going to be to hard for my elephantnose and other fish, which i am sure it will be, and having a water softner, will that add to much salt?

Shall i find my babies a new home?

Please, help, help all
Thanks,
Entkitty

Personally I'd go with only keeping the ones that can handle the water. Continual ajustment of the water chemistry, be that ph kh gh, or even the nitrAtes, is often more stressful than people sometimes realize. There are some that will argue that fish raised commercially will be able to adapt, personally I'd prefer to sell the fish you have now, then buy some that have been raised in a more similar water.

Babel entkitty never said anything about change in pH values. Just the hardness (GH values).

If it is a distant move, you might want to find you babies a new home. But you could attempt in pulling off the move. I would feel okay with that change in GH. My LFS and myself have a GH gap of that much.

It is up to you.

I wonder if you could slowly ease your fish up to that hardness by changing the water for the first few times with some purchased R/O water, and slowly upping the amount of local water you use as you go, say over a couple months and allow the fish to get used to the increased hardness of the water.
When I moved, the Ph at my old place was 7.4, hardness was a GH of 180ppm. The new place the ph is 7.6 not much difference,BUT hardness was off the chart, over 300ppm.
I did small water changes at first with the new water, easing the fish into it. I also added peat to the filter to soften the water, and quite a bit of driftwood as well. Now my water stays at ph 6.8 and a hardness of just over 140ppm. Amazing how much a pound of peat granules can change the water hardness. Fluval makes a great box of peat granules.
Can I ask as well, what kind of fish do you have?

I checked your profile, and with the exception of the ladder loach- which I have no idea what loach this is, must be a local name, most of these fish will withstand a GH of up to 20 and ph of at least 7.4
Keep as much of your water as possible, and slowly integrate new water over time, giving the fish time to get used to it, and as I mentioned before, try using some peat in your filter if you find your fish show any ill effects.
I think they would be just fine.

everyone, thank you, thank you for your advice.

Here are my water conditions now:
GH-7
kh-6
pH-7.6

here is LV w/o water conditioner, my sisters house where I will have to set-up for a month or two: (I found some pillow softners to soften the water)

GH-14
KH-7
pH-7.4

I don't have any testing done using water conditioner/softner water, so don't know what the levels will be. However, what about the salt in the water conditioner, will this effect my fish?
