Hi all. Just a quick question. I just bought a house and am still moving in. Am still planning the fish move, will prolly hit it tomorrow or Saturday. Poor fishies all alone...
Anyways, the nouse has a water softener i it. Will the water have any affect on the fish? I really don't even know how they work, only that they require salt which I don't like. Anyways will it be bad? Please help. Thanks all

It depends on what type of fish you keep. If you keep South American or Central american fish then it is excellent! If African lake cichlids or another fish from around there then you might want to see what you can do to harden it up. It really does depend on the fish you keep.

But if you do keep mainly South American fish then you hit the jackpot

Give us a list of all the fish you have and then a correct wise answer can be given.

Have a look in [link=My Profile]http://

OK, I'm sorry I overlooked that. In the small tank is a male betta. The large tank contains a pair of yo-yos, a lone molly, a rubbernosed pleco, a nice pair of blue dwarf gouramis and a school of harlequin rasboras. nothing exotic, no cichlids of any kind.
thanks for your replies

The molly would definitely prefer some harder, salt (not necessarily sodium) fortified water.

What does the water softener bring your ph and gh down to? We have a water softener too but the water still comes out of the tap at a ph of 8-9. We're sitting on a base of limestone rock with a limestone quarry up stream of our water source. With a water softener my water is still quite hard for softwater fish. I've never noticed a problem with the salt the softener adds but I wouldn't add any aquarium salt to the tanks. In another place a water softener might drop the ph down to 6 or less and the gh to 1-2degrees instead.
