over night my ph dropped from the average 7/7.5 to 5/5.5

what would cause such a drop. and is it true that when i get my ph back to 7 all the amm. will disappear.

i put in ph equalizer and ammo lock (just to be on the safe side) i also did 30 % water change and am thinking of putting in cycle.

any recommendations on how to get it back to normal?

No idea what would make your pH drop.I don't think pH has anything to do with the cycle of the tank?

I would add Cycle I love that stuff and keep testing the water to see if the cycle is holding up?

Have you added any new decor to the tank?

what is your pH out of the tap?

hmm its a puzzle...

Maybe your test kit is faulty? (just a guess). And did you just do a large water change? (maybe the tap water's Ph was alot different than your tank) hope this helps

"and is it true that when i get my ph back to 7 all the amm. will disappear."

No, that won't happen. Ammonia (NH3) converts to ammonium (NH4) when the pH of a tank is lowered (I'm not sure of the level needed for the conversion to occur, but it is probably below 7.0). Ammonium is less toxic to fish than ammonia, though still a threat. Once you bring your pH back up, any ammonium will turn back to ammonia. That's the way I understand it.

Wait, do you have ammonia in your tank? If so, then you have bigger problems than the pH.

Have you added any driftwood lately? Driftwood will lower the pH. but i`m not sure if it`ll lower it that much.

What sort of testers are you using? Test strips are very well known to be unreliable and liquid ones much better. If you have liquid ones then I think that your testkits have gone bad and that they need to be replaced. Will stop any undue panic in the future!
