Brichardi IME don't really need buffers, they're very hardy...

I have had mine for... about four years now, and one of them has lasted that whole time (her mate died ). I think I might have used a buffer to start out, but they did dandy without. They're really tough fish.

How long they will last will depend on how hard your water is(KH) to start. If your water is quite soft you will need to use more to get to desired hardness. (pH)

I personally used baking soda for my Tanganyikan tank. Much much cheaper and you dont need much either.

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

depends, what are your water parameters now?

baking soda is good for kH but does nothing for general hardness.

just use a buffering substrate such as aragonite and you'll be right as rain

yeah, superlion if your water in Lafayette is similar to Indy water then it's practically liquid rock. I would go with Sumthin_Fishy's suggestion of a calcium based substrate (crushed coral is excellent). This will buffer your ph properly without using chemicals which, imo is always a plus.
