I have a 10 gallon hex tank. When I change 10% of the water, do I need to treat it first? Or can I add the new water and put in the treatment right away?

First treat the water & then add it to your tank. Try to make is as similar as possible, especially the temperature.

I also treat my water first- let it stand overnight so the temps are close - then do the water change.

Add the dechlorinator first and let in sit for a while. You dont necessarily need to let the buckets stay over night. I just measure the water coming out of the tap with a thermometer and adjust it till its around the correct temp. Then i fill up the bucket, measure the temp again (just in case) add declorinator and let it sit for about 10 minutes and then pour it in the tank.

I have too many tanks to fill using a sink, so I use my garden hose which has only cold water- so I let them sit.

I add the full dose of Prime as I refill the aquarium with my Python. Since I change 50 gallons at a time, I skin test the tank water against the tempered tap water. My target is a 1C drop in tank temperature.

Alternately, since you are changing just 1 gallon of water, you should clean a plastic gallon jug from milk. Fill it and treat it the day before you do your water change. Use that water for your water change. After you empty the jug, fill it and treat it then let it sit, ready for the next water change!

Mike

I always prepare my water for both tanks one week before I use it. I only add the dechlorinator and I add others as I add it to the tank.

I also heat the water up first it is stored in 25lt water carriers.

The major benifit of storing is the prevention of Ich white spot entering the tank via the water.
