Both actually. pH and temperature needs to be stable and water changes frequent enough to keep nitrates low.

Chris,

Discus and cardinals come from the same biotope and have the same water needs. They like a stable pH and clean water. In an overstocked tank, you may want to do daily 20 or 25% water changes. In a lightly stocked tank, you may find that 25% water changes are best.

If you go a week before making a water change, then it is a good idea to age, heat and aerate replacement water for a day or two before the water change. Aerating the water helps it to de-gas and the pH to naturally rise. Tempering the water allows you to add it directly to your tank.
